German Chocolate cake is my absolute most favorite cake in the whole wide world. It also happens to be my husband's favorite too. We love it so much that we even had a German Chocolate cake made for our wedding. So good!!
I've been experimenting lately with ways to use these flavors in something other than cake. I guess I sort of figured if I didn't make the same thing all the time, I could eat German chocolate more often. At least that's what I'm going to keep telling myself.
So far I'm still playing with cookies and cupcakes, but this pie is to die for! Seriously delicious and oh so decadent. This is the pie that will impress even the pickiest chocolate eater.
The chocolate filling is loaded with chocolate chips and tastes like the best dense, chewy brownie you've ever had. And the frosting! Oh the frosting..... It was so hard not to eat it all right out of the pot.
German Chocolate Pie
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3/4 cup flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 9-inch unbaked pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
3 egg yolks, lightly beaten
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 cup sweetened flaked coconut
3/4 cups chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350*F
In a medium bowl combine melted butter, sugar, vanilla, and eggs until well blended. Stir in flour, and cocoa until smooth. Stir in chocolate chips.
Pour the mixture into the prepared pie crust and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the center no longer jiggles and an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
Meanwhile, make the frosting by stirring together the condensed milk, egg yolks, and butter in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly until thick and bubbly.
Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla, coconut, pecans and a pinch of salt. Cool completely before spreading over pie.
If desired serve pie topped with chocolate fudge sauce and/or pecan halves for garnish.
