I've been making my own tartar sauce at home since I was a teenager just learning how to cook. Back then it was just some miracle whip mixed with pickle relish, but it was homemade. I had no idea that you could even by bottled tartar sauce until about 10 years ago. When I saw it I actually bought it thinking it would be a good time saver. The kids were little, time was in short supply, they went through condiments like crazy....you know the excuses.
I only bought it that one time because flavor wise it couldn't compete and the ingredient list was too long for what it was. I quickly went back to homemade tartar sauce. Over time the sauce has evolved into out current favorite which is the recipe I'm sharing today. It pairs great with almost any fish and on top of a fish sandwich.....yum!
Sweet Pickle Tartar Sauce
1 cup Mayonnaise
1/2 cup finely chopped sweet pickles
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
In a bowl, combine all ingredients together, stirring well. Sauce best if it can sit at least a half hour in the refrigerator to let the flavors meld.
